Winter 2022

New Semester

The new year started on Monday, January 3rd. All the children and staff are in good health and are looking forward to the new year!

This is the third and last term of the school calendar, and students will sit for their exams in March. There are three examination candidates in their Senior Year, and they will sit for KCSE (Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education). There are four candidates in Eighth Grade, who will sit for KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education).

Due to the new education system in Kenya, Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), there will be changes in the way grade levels and examinations are set up.

Previous Education System:

  • 8 years in primary (elementary school)

  • National Exam

  • 4 years of secondary school (high school)

  • National Exam

New Education System:

  • 2 years in pre-primary (pre-school)

  • 6 years in primary (elementary)

  • 3 years in Junior Secondary (junior high)

  • National Exam

  • 3 years in Senior Secondary (high school)

  • National Exam

By the end of 2023, our current fourth grade students will sit for their government examination when they are in sixth grade. In January 2024, those students will join Junior Secondary school. We will have four levels of education at Sam’s Place if the government gives us approval.

Life Skills Lessons

First Aid Classes

The students are enjoying the life skills lessons in their new curriculum! A recent first aid lesson gave Director Simeon quite the scare. Simeon found Mercy laying on the ground “unconscious” with Teacher Deborah administering first aid on Mercy. He rushed to help thinking Mercy was injured. It was not until they began teasing him that he realized it was only a demonstration.

Sam’s Place Soccer Team

Every Saturday afternoon, Teacher Silas walks with the boys to an open field to compete with the community boys in soccer. The boys have loved the opportunity to play, and they are very tough team to score on!

Transition Update

Janet Mbera is one of the three students learning at St. Joseph’s. She sat for her first government exam as they closed for the end-year holiday. She has found a place where she is going for an internship in hairdressing and beauty. Naomi and Emmaculate are returning to St. Joseph’s to continue their studies.
